SAT Science Subject Test Preparation

Offering individual and small group support on standardized science tests including:

Tutoring the Chemistry SAT Subject Test:

My goal when tutoring the Chemistry SAT Subject Test is to provide an intensive review for students who have already taken (or are just completing) a full year of chemistry, thereby refreshing for them the knowledge they need to quickly and accurately answer the 80 questions they will encounter during this one-hour test.   We will review the major topics covered on the SAT Subject Test, including those not covered during a typical high school chemistry class such as thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, and nuclear and organic chemistry.

When tutoring the chemistry subject test I also make sure we frequently practice test-taking strategies together, including estimating answers (as the use of calculators is not permitted during the exam).  I request all of my students take practice tests every week in between tutoring sessions.  We will then use our time together to go over questions that the student got wrong on each test.  This approach allows me to efficiently tailor my support to each student’s individual needs, a focus that is not possible in a larger classroom setting.

Tutoring the Biology SAT Subject Test:

For those students who are reasonably well prepared to sit for the Biology SAT Subject Test (typically after completing an honors level high school biology course with a B or better), I emphasize breadth over depth in our tutoring sessions. We will work together on quickly reviewing all of the major core topics in biology including cellular and molecular biology, ecology, mendelian genetics, evolution and basic anatomy and physiology.  We will also cover the basics of ecology, including populations, communities, ecosystems, nutrient cycling and energy flow.  Special emphasis will be placed on the major topics a student will encounter on the test, in particular cell structure, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, mitosis and meiosis and basic biochemistry.

Without outside work, Biology is a difficult subject to score over a 700 on the subject test simply because of the wide number of topics the test covers, such as taxonomy and plant physiology, that are understandably outside the scope of a typical survey course.  It is not important to be an expert in each of these subjects.  The goal here (unfortunate by true) is simply to learn enough to grab the right answer and move on.  I also work on general test taking strategies as many students taking this test are often in the 9th or 10th grade, frequently making the biology SAT subject test the first standardized test they will encounter.

Students will be required to take practice tests on their own between tutoring sessions. We will then use our time together to go over questions that the student got wrong on each test.  This approach allows me to efficiently tailor my support to each student’s individual needs, a focus that is not possible in a larger classroom setting.

As a science tutor I offer individual and group support at all levels, from remedial to accelerated.  Tutoring physics and other sciences, study skills tutor in Sudbury, Wayland, Weston, Lincoln, Concord, Framingham, Natick and surrounding area since 2002.
