My approach to teaching


I make it a priority to start with the most pressing issue: what is presently being covered in class. I want my students to walk away from the first (or any) session feeling more confident in their understanding of current material. I take note of any gaps in their understanding, and make sure to weave in that missing knowledge as we proceed; it typically doesn’t take many sessions for most students to catch up. I also provide my students with the reasoning tools they need to make better use of both class and homework time, helping them build the connections needed to truly learn a subject.

 

Why I became a science tutor

 

I have always been intrigued by science and how the world works. I fell in love with high school biology. I still remember reading The Web of Life in Mr. McCarthy’s biology class and being captivated with the inter-relatedness of the natural world; how one part depends on many others for its very survival. Mr. McCarthy taught me something else, something arguably of more value – he taught, by example, how to take better lecture notes, how to actively read a textbook, how to ask and then answer questions which, in turn, deepened my knowledge and thus my interest in what we were covering. He was invested in his students as learners. I didn’t know it then, but he was planting seeds that would translate later on into my deep desire to teach, to engage students more fully in the wonders of science and to raise their confidence in themselves as learners.

Over the years those seeds lay dormant. I pursued a career in science, first as a research assistant at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, then as a veterinary nurse, and ultimately, post-graduate school, as an environmental specialist with the US EPA . While I enjoyed these challenges, something was missing. It wasn’t until I shifted my work to home to raise my two now teenage children that I realized what was missing. I began to water those seeds, and started my tutoring business.

Since then, I have had the privilege of supporting students in all areas of science, from biology to chemistry, earth science to physics, anatomy and physiology, the science SAT subject tests and more. I have worked with students from middle school to college, remedial to AP level, coming from a wide variety of schools including Sudbury, Weston and Wayland High Schools, The Rivers School, Dana Hall, Belmont Hill, Beaver Country Day School, Worcester Academy, and Concord Academy, to name a few.  In all cases I have enjoyed the opportunity of helping these students not only improve in their coursework, but also become more confident learners, which, for me, is the ultimate goal.
